The Mineral Ridge junior finished second there, and was determined to change his fortunes on Tuesday at the Trumbull County Cross Country Championships. At the Trumbull County Fairgrounds, Pappagallo raced out ahead of the rest of the field right out of the gates.
Despite facing a brief challenge from Maplewood’s Alex Donaldson and McDonald’s Joey Cappuzzello, Pappagallo pulled away from them down the stretch to win the boys individual title with a time of 15:53.8.
“It feels really good. It was good to be back here again,” Pappagallo said after the race. “We raced this course during COVID all the time when I was in junior high. So I really got to know the course and where to really pick up all the little turns and tangents I could run.
Anytime I’m here, I try to have an open mindset and I always try to stay focused with all those little details.” It was Pappagallo’s second Trumbull County title, having previously won in 2021. Cappuzzello finished second with a time of 16:12.4, while Donaldson came in third in 16:22.0
