New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra Shines in World Cup 2023 Opener Against England
In a stunning display of talent, 23-year-old Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand left the England batters at a loss for words in their World Cup 2023 opening match at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Ravindra, in sensational form with the bat, partnered with experienced Devon Conway to lead New Zealand’s chase of 283 runs in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 5.
Conway’s outstanding performance made him the first batter since Virat Kohli and Virender Sehwag in 2011 to score a hundred in a World Cup opening match. The left-handed opener, known for his experience playing in Indian conditions during his stint with the Chennai Super Kings, smashed an incredible hundred in just 83 balls, combining class with craft in a truly remarkable knock.
Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra was not far behind, congratulating his partner Conway as he achieved his milestone. With only 10 runs needed to reach his own hundred, Ravindra reached the mark in style in the 31st over of the chase. This magnificent century became his maiden ODI hundred and was achieved on his World Cup debut.
Ravindra’s century came hot on the heels of his impressive 97 against Pakistan in a warm-up match in Hyderabad just days prior. His ability to score runs fluently against both spin and pace was evident as he hit 4 sixes and 9 boundaries in his century.
Walking in at No. 3 after New Zealand lost their opener Will Young for a duck, Rachin Ravindra fearlessly attacked the England bowling attack, putting pressure on the opposition bowlers who were aiming to take early wickets. Ravindra’s aggressive onslaught ensured New Zealand maintained a healthy run rate throughout the contest. He showcased his all-round abilities by executing cuts, pulls, and straight drives with the assurance of a seasoned professional. Ravindra’s partnership of 200 runs with Conway proved instrumental in New Zealand’s victory, as they humbled defending champions England.
Rachin Ravindra’s remarkable performance also earned him the distinction of becoming the 13th youngest batter to hit a World Cup century and the youngest New Zealand batter to achieve this feat.
Unlike Devon Conway, whose celebration was understated, Ravindra expressed his jubilation in a more flamboyant manner. Removing his helmet, he embraced the applause from the dressing room and the fans, basking in the glory of his achievement at the iconic stadium.
